Mallrat, Broods, Astrid S & 14 Of This Week’s Best New Bops

There’s a lotta good shit this week.

Mallrat & Basenji – Nobody’s Home

Mallrat enters supermegapopstar territory today with Nobody’s Home, a vulnerable and personal song she’s made with Basenji, that’s delivered with a level of confidence I don’t think we’ve seen from her yet.

Young Franco, Reva Devito & Golden Vessel – Otherside

Girls Don’t Cry was a master-stroke and this is an excellent follow-up from beautiful prince Young Franco, with Kaytranada collaborator Reva Devito & Brisbane angel Golden Vessel singing on a bassline-infused beat that wouldn’t go amiss on a Mura Masa track.

Astrid S – Someone New

Continuing her glide towards being the most likeable popstar on the planet, Astrid S has made a song with Charli XCX & Noonie Bao and Swedish pair Jack & Coke (who made iconic bop Focus with Charli) that speaks to the desperate unavoidable thoughts about your ex after a breakup. FAT MOOD!

Dugong Jr ft. Austen – Holding On

Glitchy, groovy bop with a dance move. We stan.

Galantis ft. OneRepublic – Bones

Guys it’s finally happened – Galantis have done that Avicii thing where they technically make dance music but it wouldn’t be out of place at a rodeo. A rather dream-teamy collaboration with OneRepublic and Leland (& also yeehaw legend Andy Grammer which makes sense), Galantis add another sound to their bow and do it extremely well.

BROODS – Too Proud

The whole Broods album is amazing and we’re going to write a thing about that at some point in the next few days but Too Proud really stands out, as a conversation about mental health that takes these guys to an unmasked level we’ve never seen them before. The way Caleb’s voice cracks over the chorus is jawdropping. What a song.

Bhad Bhabie ft. Kodak Black – Bestie

It’s not that deep honey. It’s a fun bop about having a bestie. Queen. Her Snapchat series starts Monday. I might re-download the app.

KESMAR – Up To You

They wrote it with Phoenix in mind. That shines through. Sameblod also feels like they’re there. Very likeable sunny pop music from a smart Sydney kid.

KLP x Kilian & Jo – Under The Influence

A song full of lazerbeams and cool drums from impending Mumma & superwoman KLP and brilliant Berlin crew Kilian & Jo WHOOOOOOOOO have a bop we covered like three years ago with king of my heart Erik Rapp. Icons.

Thelma Plum – Not Angry Anymore

Gamilaraay legend Thelma Plum got together with amazing director Claudia Sangiorgi Dallimore, found a house that was on the verge of demolition and turned it into a mad celebration of realisation of what is actually in your own control. There is an extremely good dog in the video. The clip accompanies another joyous jump-around song she’s made to follow up the brilliant Clumsy Love.

AJR – 100 Bad Days

AJR are the most intricate, expansive pop people making music in NYC right now and this is a phat return to form.

Jarryd James – Slow Motion

I cannot begin to tell you how good it is to have Jarryd James back. It has been literally four years since his album. FOUR YEARS. This song is such an excellent return.

Scarlet Pleasure – What A Life

One of Denmark’s biggest bands is Scarlet Pleasure. They possess many bops and a very big opportunity to be a massive deal this year globally. What A Life is about taking pingers. But it is also about just not giving a fuck. It is very good.

Sunset City ft. Samantha Jade – Forget It All

Find me a more feel good summer song from 2019 so far. I dare you. BOP.
